Rough Stuff

The two watercolours posted here were painted with Winsor &Newton Artists tube colours on 140lb/300gsm rough paper, the first on Daler Rowney Langton A4 and the second on Arches 9x12/23x31.
Hope you are all well ... Me, I'm still feeling a little rough but generally on the mend :)
Happy painting!

  1. I'm glad you're feeling better, Michael! Two wonderful watercolours! The second one is my favourite, I love green landscapes and hills on a sunny day!

    1. Thanks Judy. These are both from imagination/memory but the second one is memories of growing up near to the Peak District in Derbyshire :)

    1. Thanks Jane. The second is my favourite too! I was concerned that the foreground was a bit too busy but I think it's ok now.

    1. Thank you Sue. The new studio is great but it needs painting, some shelving, but most of all, some form of heating, even now!

  6. Both paintings are very nice Michael. Although I prefer the second, I really like the way you've dealt with the reflections in the first one. Take it easy. ;-)

    1. Thanks John. I spent more time on the reflections than the willow trees themselves! Easy is very much what the doctor ordered :)

  7. Hi Michael, both painting are beautiful but my favourite is the second one....it brings me back to the past, when I spent much time in England, and I admired the beautiful English countryside. Take care! Ciao.

  8. And now that you have tested the two papers, which one do you prefer?
I remenber having painted on Langhton paper at the beginning of my color travel and enjoyed it. The paper was very white and the pigments shined on it.

    1. Thanks Lydie. I remember buying one of the old green cover Langton spiralbound pads twenty or so years ago, way back when I first started in watercolours. I thought the better paper would make me a better artist ... but as it didn't have the desired result I naturally blamed the paper and stopped buying it!!! Now I'm a little better at painting, I absolutely love Langton, and yes, it is a gorgeous white, quite different from the cream coloured Arches. I have yet to try the 100% rag version of Langton yet ... but then again I also like W&N, Fabriano 5, Saunders Waterford, RWS, Arches .... :)
